After seeing an advert for Annie McKie’s Writing Retreat in a writer’s magazine, I decided to check out the web site and was sold, booking there and then.
On arrival I found the setting was perfect. My room, warm and comfortable with modern en-suite was part of, but separate from the rest of the cottage, ensuring complete privacy should I wish it. Set into a hillside in the Forest of Dean, it has breath-taking views of the forest through a large double glazed French window that leads on to a private balcony.
Even though I’m a non-vegetarian, I found the vegetarian based fare varied and tasty and I enjoyed every meal.
Annie was enthusiastic about my work, but was not afraid of giving honest and sometimes critical advice. This soon helped unlock my ‘block’ and I spent the next couple of days writing, only breaking for meals or going for long walks through the forest.
It was a perfect environment for someone like me, stuck in a cul-de-sac with my writing, needing peace and quiet with honest, impartial guidance – I was not disappointed and intend to return soon.
